I guess what I'm asking is should my 1980 xs400 special be able to run 55 or even 65 mph? I've had problems with the bike since I got it in March. I've rebuild the carbs because gas was leaking into air box and found floats had cracks in them. My last ride was a few days ago and it struggled to keep 50 seems 45 was really the max. While riding one of the exhaust studs broke off flush and haven't had a chance to fix that yet but now gas is leaking again for the 4th time. One of the "bracets" on the carb that holds the float pin was broken by a prior owner. I'm not sure I'll ever get this fixed with out replacing the whole carb body. It looks like they dripped solder across the broken side to complete the hole. It seems to hold well but I don't really trust it. Any ideas?View attachment 32369

Look in the classifieds for a carb body. XSChris has a lot of stuff up, along with many others. You should be able to do around 100mph. You should also use the fuel shut-off valve when you arent riding. I use it every time i turn my bike off.

Thanks for the tip on the classifieds. I do use the fuel valve but it leaks while driving down the road. Mine doesn't have a true off. Prime leaks all the time and run leaks going while driving

I've got carb bodies coming thanks to xschris. So I'm hoping this weekend I can get it fixed. The carbs have been a problem since I got the bike.

I recently changed my rear sprocket for better around town performance but last winter it would run 100 mph and felt like it had a little more before I got scared. To old for that foolishness. Mine is an 80 Special frame. Everything else is 77.

Agreed! I just got the new carbs built this weekend. I plan on getting carbs in and exhaust back together in the next few days. Then I'd like a long ride with no more troubles.
