    Redline Question

True enough. There are few things as depressing as seeing the bike insurance payment come out when there's still two feet of snow on the ground. :wtf:

    Redline Question

Okay guys, thanks for the info. I looked when I got home, redline is actually 7500 on the tach, but either way. The fact that it's a Canadian bike wouldn't make a difference would it? Posted via Mobile

    Redline Question

Hi again I was just reading Gramatrons build post and noticed that his 78 Special SOHC redlines at 9000. My 81 special shows redline at 6500. Both motors appear to be identical on the surface, so why the variation? Thanks in advance.

What Should "Normal" compression be for a used engine?

I don't know what it's like in the USA, but here in Canada the lower rated (87/89 octane) usually have up to 10 percent ethanol content. ive been told to avoid running ethanol in carbureted engines of any kind.

    a wee bit of oil

Mystery solved....at least partially. Drained the oil using the lower port, and removed the screen. Total oil minus what already leaked out. 4L. WAY too much oil. The engine ran for about an hour with said volume in it. Question is now, do I just refill it with the correct amount and hope for...

    a wee bit of oil

I'll drain the oil now and see what falls out. I assumed that I had an empty crankcase.

    a wee bit of oil

Ah, the old loyal order of water buffaloes kind of thing eh ? To quote Fred Flinstone. And thanks for the file. I'll print it out. Im on my way out to drain the oil, pop the side cover, and see what's what. I'll post pics.

    a wee bit of oil

A couple of weeks ago, I changed the oil, draining using the port on the side of the crankcase. (I understand now that the one on the bottom is the preferred drain.) Almost no oil came out, not even when I removed the filter. I assumed that last year's oil had either leaked out or burned off. I...

    a wee bit of oil

Thanks for the advice, would the gasket be included in a typical engine gasket set such as the one below? The engine has 66000 km on it so if gasket issues keep arising, it may be worth it to just buy a set. Thanks much for the help btw http://m.ebay.com/itm/131446992036?nav=SEARCH

    a wee bit of oil

thanks for the advice. Here's the video link As for the oil, the bike had a sight glass, though it's impossible to see through it . That said, An oil change was done about two hours of riding ago . Posted via Mobile

    a wee bit of oil

Won't let me post a video, if you look at the first picture, there I'd a slight gap been the crankcase and the attitude cover the oil wells up from inside the cover through that gap when the engine is running. I'll try to highlight the spot on the photo.

Sorry, continued. The gap shown in the first pic . I took a video which I am about to try to post .

    a wee bit of oil

Thanks for the tip. I discovered tonight that the oil is not coming from the breather, but is increasingly welling up from the gap

    a wee bit of oil

You're right. The po replaced the air boxes with pods, so I don't believe there is any place to connect the breather hose to though. This is all pretty new to me though.

    a wee bit of oil

Thanks. I was a little worried about the rings. This motor has well over 60000km on it. I understand engine parts for these things are hard to come by.

    a wee bit of oil

Finally got to take the bike out for a spin. Ran pretty well, though my clutch adjustment was purely done. Had to release the clutch lever nearly 100% before clutch would engage. When I got back home and parked the bike, I immediately noticed oil dripping from under the engine the picture of...

Wont start, not even a cough.

Success!!!! After draining the gas, cleaning the carbs, and lastly replacing both plugs and changing the oil she started up midway through the first kick. Thanks to everyone here who offered guidance, it's a real confidence booster to have knowledgeable people to fall back on. A final question...

Wont start, not even a cough.

Okay, here's an update... Drained the fuel from the carbs and tanks. Removed the carbs, disassembled them, cleaned with brake cleaner and blew out the passages with the compressor. Reassembled everything, added fresh 91 octane, removed and cleaned the plugs, replaced the plugs. Still nothing...

Wont start, not even a cough.

Well, an update.... Tried the starting fluid, to no avail. So it's time to pull the carbs. I'm grateful for all the advice so far. Can any of you fine folks point me towards a good how to on the forums. It'll be my first time opening up a carb so simple is good. You know, primary colours, no big...
