starting issues (Won't start once engine warm)

Hmmm. I don't know. Maybe someone else can chime in here that has more experience/theory in the carb area on this one. It sounds to me like the choke is working from what you describe. Could there still be a carb issue? Anyone? There is the basic fuel-air-spark triangle of what an engine needs...

starting issues (Won't start once engine warm)

Sounds like you might have a choke problem, meaning it is not really working when you turn it on. For my machine (an xs360), I got it with completely seized carbs, full of green gummy crap. Slides did not move. Choke did not move. I completely disassembled it, and needed to really clean out the...

    "retro" tires any good?

Thanks for the advice. So you are saying that the modern rubber or construction is not what makes modern tires better, it is the modern tread design? Or maybe retro-looking tires are also made in more retro ways - meaning we should pay attention to the speed ratings, I guess. I have no idea...

    "retro" tires any good?

I'm probably opening a can of worms here... but my stock tires are old. I like them, but they need to go. I have a dunlop k70 for the rear, and was thinking of matching it with a duro hf319 for the front...just because they look like a set. The dunlop does not come in the right size for the...

starting issues (Won't start once engine warm)

I'm not saying this is your problem, but it is worth considering. I had an old 78 Honda CB125, I had a very "similar" issue with it. Not starting hot, and also dying on me when hot, like it was out of gas. Fouled plug. I tried everything with the carb and fuel and tank. Messed with the points...

RR38 Regulator Rectifier - Where to buy

I just used the crimp on style bullet connectors that I connected to the end of the original pigtail I cut off of the mechanical regulator. That way I still had the connection to the harness intact. I cut the plastic back on the face and gave them a little squeeze and they fit like they were...

RR38 Regulator Rectifier - Where to buy

It worked! I just bypassed the black wire that goes into the harness, because it was grounded somewhere in the wire harness (I started to look for it, but it was just too far in). So I connected the black wire from the field coil pigtail to the brown wire* in the regulator pigtail. Then I made...

RR38 Regulator Rectifier - Where to buy

OH! I see what is happening. In the original XS360 setup, with the mechanical regulator (VR), the VR "pushes" power down the green wire through the coil to the ground (completing the circuit). In the new setup, the VR "grounds" to complete the circuit "pulling" power through the field coil. Ha...

RR38 Regulator Rectifier - Where to buy

Yeah, that is right. I saw that pic on a car site when I was trying to figure things out. It is the same regulator as mine, same connector, same shape and everything. Thanks again. I will try it out tomorrow.

Thanks! What you said makes sense. I'm sure I know the colours.

RR38 Regulator Rectifier - Where to buy

OK, I should be able to try this tomorrow. But with this setup... there is 12V on the black wire, whereas before it was ground... does this "backward voltage" affect the field coil at all?

RR38 Regulator Rectifier - Where to buy

OH. So that means the brown wire (from the harness/fuse) has to connect to the black wire (from the field coil) before they both connect to the pin on the regulator. If that is the case, I can just jumper them across from the pigtail connection, and remove the black wire from the pigtail, and...

RR38 Regulator Rectifier - Where to buy

Hi XSLeo, sorry to bother you, but I'm reviving this thread from last year. I got my bike running, but not charging. I have gone through things again this spring and find that it is probably the new voltage regulator that is not working. All my ohms are in spec for the field coil and the...

XS 360, Key off. Draws current when connecting battery. Headlight relay clicks.

I did buy and wire in a new regulator ($20) and rectifier ($8). I knew only that the rectifier was bad, but the regulator was old, so wanted to replace it. If you are interested you can see how I did them here in bcware's thread about regulators and rectifiers - I posted some pics - it was a...

RR38 Regulator Rectifier - Where to buy

I got the rectifier and heat sink from China via Amazon for $8, the regulator locally for about 20. As promised, here is the install pics using Leo's rectifier and regulator combo. The heat sink had the same thread as the mounting bolt from the old rectifier (go figure). I bent the original...

RR38 Regulator Rectifier - Where to buy

OH, and on some trucks I have worked on before, sometimes, if you are careful, you can pull the metal connectors out of the plastic connector head (it might require squeezing, and pulling or some such manipulation), and then push them into the new connector. That way you don't have to splice...

RR38 Regulator Rectifier - Where to buy

On my bike, the black with red stripe on the regulator side of the connectors goes to a brown on the wire harness side. Check your bike, it might do the same thing. Black is ground on both sides of the connectors, and green goes to green on both sides.

RR38 Regulator Rectifier - Where to buy

I'm glad you like it. I appreciate the help you have all given, and would like to let people know what worked for me. I will post when the rectifier comes. I still haven't put everything back on the bike, so I hope it all fits the way I have mounted it :-). D.

RR38 Regulator Rectifier - Where to buy

I'm still waiting for the rectifier via amazon. However, I have got the voltage regulator set up. I wanted to mount it in a similar spot, so I modified the case a bit. Had to tap in some new holes in the battery/air filter holder. This type is linked to Leo's advice. I used the 75 Dart type of...

RR38 Regulator Rectifier - Where to buy

So according to all we have gone through so far, this rectifier/regulator (linked below) SHOULD work for the XS250, XS360, XS400, as well as the listed XS650? http://www.xs650direct.com/products-30.html about 3/4 down the page there is a replacement rectifier/regulator Part #24-2089. If...
