Rewire of electrical installation '81 SE

Now reading the schematics new questions appear. There are few symbols that are a bit unclear for me, so: - Apparently the RH rear turn has only + cable and uses grounding by the chassis mounting bolt. However, what is this other grounding (the other red arrow)? - I suppose that these two are...

Rewire of electrical installation '81 SE

Hi mates. I'm going to rewire my XS400SE '81, BUT I'm not able to find a supplier for the cables. Any ideas for supplier in Europe will be highly appreciated. I've found a couple of distributors of tme.eu in Bulgaria (I'm from here), but all sales are for 100+ meters, so ... doesn't work.

Electrical system change - cables sizes?

Hi guys. I'm about to change the entire electrical installation of my XS400SE ('81). I was trying to find some info on the size of the cables, but wasn't able to find such anywhere. In Hynes is not written, too. Using some calculators online it appears that for the headlight (50Watts on 12...

    81 xs400 rings and pistons.

I'm currently in the rebore process. So far - 270Euros for pistons, rings and bolts +0.25 (first oversize) and probably around 50Euros for reboring and honing, still waiting the price. I was low on compression - 9.0 bars (under the limit, but working). Tried with hone and the old rings (bought...

New one here ...... probably brat/cafe build

Hi again. It's been a while ..... more than a month :( But, a lot of things are done. :) The engine is removed and opened entirely. Here some pics of it. To be honest, things doesn't look very good. Probably never cleaned around the front sprocket and below: The back and the right side were...

    Question about change of gearing

And to be in help of others that are interested in the topic, here are few links that I've found useful: - http://www.gearingcommander.com/ - quite useful for calculating different front/rear sprockets and chain length - RPM change, speed change, same tooth - same link calculator (at the...

    Question about change of gearing

@NewHavenMike, thanks for the info. I did a bit of reading, still not an expert on the subject, but it appears that this is more relevant when speaking for directly working gears. In the case of a chain it's not such an issue. What I've been able to find for chains is that the chain must not be...

    Question about change of gearing

@NewHavenMike, I've not heard about such requirement for odd/even gears. Any references? @xschris, I'm 100kg and I need a lot of torque to start moving :D :D :D :D Are you using standard chain or any kind of O,Z,X, etc. rings? I'm thinking to take the DID 50 530 chain -...

    Question about change of gearing

According to Haynes the stock gearing of XS400SE (4G5) is 16/36 (I bought it like this) with rear tyre 120/90 R16 (I bought it with 130/90). I'll use 130/90 R16 (need the same diameter in front and rear) and after a bit of calculations with https://www.gearingcommander.com/ I'm thinking about...

New brings home a '80 400 special... Now what?

Hi there and welcome to the biking family! :) On top of the post of NewHeavenMike I would add to the initial price new chain and preferably sprockets, but that’s later. I would not try to start a 30 years stale engine with its oil inside. Throw the oil put brand new lighter (5w-30 or lighter)...

    Question about change of gearing

Hey folks. :) A bit different question on gearing, as a lot of threads are speaking about more highway speed, but I’m on the opposite side. I’m searching a bit more torque from my ‘81 XS400SE - 95% city driving. Not a lot of kilometers on the bike early - around 2000km. I’m thinking about...

New one here ...... probably brat/cafe build

Back again. It's been a while, not working on the bike and not getting time to sit in front of the PC for reading, writing. @NewHavenMike, you are right. The bike doesn't feel the same, at all, and the thing that I like is exactly as written by you - revving the bike and not exceeding 100km/h...

New one here ...... probably brat/cafe build

Hi again. I've been able to steal an hour yesterday and did the air filters job. Removed the stock box and installed temporary chrome conical filters. Will need some filtering element while working on the engine. What will be the final variant, I'm still not sure. Had to reinstall the bracket...
