The wiring issue was the black wire from the voltage regulator had shorted on the frame and melted the insulation up the harness a ways. Thanks.

Hello.. Just got a project bike for my son and I. Tackled a couple small wiring issues so far but haven't been able to get much information on replacing/rebuilding the starter on the 1977 xs400. It turns over the starter but doesn't engage the motor. Some times it will catch and work but...
