left blinker doesn't work once reassembled

I had a similar issue. When I would reassemble mine, it would go on, but not flash. It turned out to be a grounding issue. Make sure the metal from the turn signal is not touching the metal frame (there should be a rubber bushing between them). Also, check to see the the wiring has any worn out...

    Oil leak issues

My bike has been been leaking oil since I bought it a year and a half ago, but it seems to be getting worse. It's coming out somewhere near the front sprocket. It only has a couple drips when it sits for a couple days, so it must be leaking out only while driving. I have to top up the oil every...

    Only runs smooth on reserve

Thanks a lot. I found a worn spot near the end of the vacuum hose and snipped it off. I also noticed the cracks in my rubber carb boots are getting pretty deep so sealed them up with some glue and electrical tape. Everything works fine now, but I'm going to order some new carb boots.

    Only runs smooth on reserve

It's hooked up. I'll take a closer look at it in the morning.

    Only runs smooth on reserve

Suddenly my bike is having trouble running with the petcock in the "on" position. I switch to reserve and it runs like normal. When in "on," it goes for a few minutes and then starts to sputter and pop and easily stall. I pulled off the gas tank and pulled off the petcock. Since it doesn't...

How do I adjust the rear suspension?

There is, and that's how you adjust the tension on the chain. The further the tire from the bike, the tighter your chain. You want to have a little slack in the chain (my manual recommends 10 to 20 mm).

I see the pictures now. Looks good.

How do I adjust the rear suspension?

I don't see the pictures but it sounds like you did it right. You'll have to take it out for a test ride with your passenger and hopefully that cures the issue. Next thing you know you'll be ripping apart engines.

How do I adjust the rear suspension?

You're just adjusting the tension. No need to worry about the front. If that bottoms out, you'd likely have to get stronger springs for those. When you adjust the rear shock, the wheel will stay in the same spot.

How do I adjust the rear suspension?

Here's a link to the parts diagrams on Bike Bandit: http://www.bikebandit.com/houseofmotorcycles/1982-yamaha-xs400j/o/m8257 Before you pull the rear wheel off, make sure you can see the shock behind the wheel (the part with a big spring around it). Some bikes have different access points to...

How do I adjust the rear suspension?

I looked at the parts diagram on Bike Bandit for your bike and it has a basic monoshock system. Attached to the bar at the rear wheel (the swing arm) is a shock. It's tucked away in front of the rear wheel. Having just seen a few photos of the bike, I'm not sure what the best way to access it...

How do I adjust the rear suspension?

Those "thunks" may be your tire hitting the inside of the fender. If there are any rough spots it could take some chunks out of the rubber. I'm not familiar with the XS400R suspension, but my '82 XS 400SJ (different setup) is pretty easy to adjust with a big adjustable wrench and a cloth to stop...

Does it turn over fully with the starter? Do you try kick starting it?

Help please bike shuts off while riding

I had a similar issue. It ended up being the clip for my ignition fuse was broken, but managed to stay in place. Most of the time it would make a connection, all of a sudden it would move a little and stall. If that isn't it, I'd be looking at the wires coming off the ignition for any damage.

    Brake pads

The brake pads on my '82 Heritage Special are about done. Any suggestions for replacements? I checked out bike bandit and they didn't have any OEM and the only aftermarket ones they had for an SJ were $40. I can pay that if I have too, but I wouldn't mind something a little cheaper. The ones...

Does my 1980 XS400 Special have 6 gears?!?!

    I'm at about 5,000 RPM at 90 km/h in 6th. I wonder if you're skipping 5th somehow.

Does my 1980 XS400 Special have 6 gears?!?!

Another seemingly obvious observation: does your tach work? I know when I test drove my bike it was at night and the tach light didn't work. I thought it was only running on 5 gears just because gears 5 and 6 are so close together it's not all that noticeable unless you look at the tach.

Newbie here w question, XS 400 just dies

Mine stranded me for an hour two weeks ago with the same issue. It ended up that the clip for the ignition fuse was broken, but it had stayed in place and would usually make contact. Your problem definitely sounds electrical. If it's not an issue in the fuse box, start tracing wires. Do other...

    MPG

I get about 45 mpg, so it sounds like you're doing pretty good. Mine includes some driving with a passenger and I weigh about 210 lbs.

    tach quit working

I had a similar issue. I pulled the tach out of its casing and pumped it full of WD-40. I put it in where the tach cable connects, which when done repeatedly, pulled a lot of crap out of it. I also squirted it in where the one light slips in, aiming it at the centre of the tach. It will make the...
