I recently sold my '82 XS400 but I still have the manual which includes a detailed wiring diagram. I would be glad to send it to someone who could use it. The option of scanning it and posting it electronically just isn't available to me. Let me know if you would like it.

I like having a "wiring diagram" site, but the best wiring diagram I found for my 81 is in another thread, and I don't know how to move it to this thread. The diagram is in a message from "ThePsuedoMonkey" dated 04-29-2012, "Re: no power to headlight, cant trace problem".

I went thru my '83, and found no diode. The relays were the problem, combined with poor electrical connection to the new headlight. I had to clean off the contacts a couple of times to get a reliable connection. Did you try bypassing the relay to get power to the headlight all the time?

That wiring diagram is a life saver. I have an '83 400 XS and had a vexing headlight problem. Got it solved. Thanks
