cannot get my battery to work!

Silly question. Did you charge the battery when you bought it? Mine required several hours on my trickle charger before it was ready to use.

how do I adjust the valves?

Carbs are now synced. Thanks for the tip. Had to turn the idle screw way down afterward. Nice burn on the back of my hand from adjusting it at red lights.

    New In the PNW!

Seems to me the XS1100 is much more ready to become a cafe racer than the XJ. The later bikes just look more cruiser-ish. I suspect that many of the pictures you're seeing are earlier models with the flatter lines and more forward seating position. My 81 XS400S took on the cafe look very quickly...

how do I adjust the valves?

Checked out the post linked by Lego this morning then went for it. Very smooth process with good documentation. Plus it seemed to intimidate the hell out of my neighbor who pays someone to do the brakes on his pickup. On the test ride noticed much better power across all engine speeds, but much...

    Best motorcycle insurance?

Just got my renewal bill from Progressive. $75 per year- plus a $6 fee if I don't pay it all at once. On the other hand I'm over 40 with no at-fault accidents, ever, so I suppose I'm not much of a risk by their statistical models- or maybe it's got to do with northern Ohio's 9 month winter...

    Help Adjusting Clutch Cable?!?!?

When I read this forum this morning, I totally missed the part about the adjuster being under the black rubber cap on the sprocket cover. I pulled the whole cover assembly off before I figured out what I really had to do. Once I extracted my head from my a$$ this was one of the easiest jobs...

Rear brake pedal moves way too far

Thanks for the replies. I was just reading an older post on the same subject. Looks like the shoe separating is not that uncommon. Who knew shit would fail after only 32 years... Calling my parts store in the morning to get them on order.

Rear brake pedal moves way too far

Just took my '81 out of the barn after 17 years. Everything's going good- cleaned the carbs, changed the oil, new battery, until today I'm about a half-hour into a ride and the rear brake pedal goes way past its usual limit. It was moving about an inch, maybe inch and a half if I really pressed...
