Yes, not sure what is going on. I just came back from a 3 mile ride and it is not doing it. I have a slight sputter at around 5000-6000 rpms,but thfast idle didn't happen.

Akirasan. Thanks for info. I thought that I had read somewhere about doing that. Other post suggest to lean of a mixture. I will pull plugs and have a look at them also.

I am having the same issue. How do you search out a vacuum leak? I replaced the boots earlier this year. Replaced hose from petcock to carb also. Still wants to idle at around 3000 rpms. It only happens when the engine is hot.

Charge system seems to be working,but the battery still discharges while riding. Turn signal and brake lights will not work at the same time. Would this happen if nothing more than a bad battery? The battery will charge up when I put it on a charger.

Good Question. Sadly there are several answers. Depends on air filters, how clean the carbs are and what you mean when you say set at.

Vacuum leak or running too lean

I had bike to local shop to have carbs synchronized. Not sure it was done properly. Plug fouls only one one side. Carbon fouls real bad. I suspect fuel mixture problem. Not sure if they new what they were doing. How do I go about doing the carbs myself?

Having problems with idle. Idles fine then slowly dies. It also seems that the throttle will stick and idle at 3000rpms

No problem @16VGTIDave . Really appreciated the information. BTW 1979 XS400 with only 1400 miles. Still all stock. Had to do some work because it had set for years, pretty much neglected.

I like the Humor, maybe. The bike runs fine once I get it started. I am new to the XS400. Is there something I should be doing differently? Not sure if I should choke or not, throttle or not. Just asking for help not sarcasm.

Just obtained an XS 400 F from my deceased father-in-law's garage. The fuse boxed had been removed and the wiring spliced together. I bought a new fuse box and with the help of several wiring diagrams was able to make the bike run, charge the battery, and even have some lighting functions. I...
