Getting the bike back together and I'm having a hard time with getting it started

Ok I'll look into the manual. It's an 81 xs400 and I don't really know anything else specific. I will get a little further into the electrical. Now that the battery is charged and in good shape it'll be easier to work on. I was having that issue previously but am much better now.

Getting the bike back together and I'm having a hard time with getting it started

Hi guys, I'm picking back up on this project as I've been busy the last 9 months or so with a new business. I received a bike mostly in boxes but with a title from a friend for free. I'm at the point now where I have a few issues I'm having a hard time thinking through. I can get the...

Can't get bike to turn over due to no power

My voltage on a charger is 11.3 when I try to turn it over it is going down to 3 and sometimes 0. Could the battery be the issue even though it's on the charger? I tested the coils for resistance. Aside from there being some obvious battery problem the coils were both at 3.3 or so. On a side...

Can't get bike to turn over due to no power

Ok I'll look at that. Even when using the kick starter I'm not getting it to fire at all with starter fluid. If that helps. Motor turns over with kick starter but nothing it happening. I didn't have any spark from what I could tell.

Can't get bike to turn over due to no power

Ok are you referring to the entire right side of the bike? At this point I'm venturing into uncharted territory for myself. The starter sprocket was trying to move but the larger sprocket wasn't spinning at all. I was able to turn the larger one with a wrench.

Can't get bike to turn over due to no power

Kick starter will turn over motor. I also hear a spinning sound when it's a real good kick.

Can't get bike to turn over due to no power

So I was able to open up the side cover, and pressed the start button. The starter was indeed trying to turn the engine over. So I'm confident my problems initially were low voltage, once the battery was charged for a while the start button worked. Now that the starter appears to be attempting...

Can't get bike to turn over due to no power

So at this point I've tried to jump the two larger wires to turn the starter. Nothing has happened aside from a electrical hum coming from the engine. I'm guessing the starter is bad then? I was able to turn it over a few months ago. I also traced the wires through the start switch and the key...

Can't get bike to turn over due to no power

I've only tried to start it using the electric starter. I'm not even getting power past the relay from what I can tell. I'll follow the wires a little more thoroughly but when I got the bike it was in pretty rough shape.

Can't get bike to turn over due to no power

It's the starter relay. Sheesh I feel kinda dumb. Battery it fully charged and all wires are connected properly from what I can tell. All fuses are good as well.

Can't get bike to turn over due to no power

Hi, I'm working on an 81 xs400. This bike was given to me for free cause it was in pieces. I'm currently trying to get the bike to turn over. I've charged the new battery, and have a good ground and all of the ignition wires connected. I am trying to test the circuit and am having...

Push rod not going in at all

Oh wow. I did guess I wasn't able to apply enough force to it. I'll just button it back up and adjust later like normally.

Push rod not going in at all

Hi guys, I'm putting the bike back together and I am having a hard time getting the push rod to go in. It's in there but does not seem to actually push in any further. Seems like it should but I have no idea why.

Motor pulled, should I rebuild the engine while it's out?

Damn. Ok the compression was right at 100 in both sides. For some reason I was getting a bad seal on the tester and I think they are actually a little higher. How about a good carb clean as a minimum? I'm already not looking forward to putting that motor back in.

Motor pulled, should I rebuild the engine while it's out?

Gents, I have an '80 xs400 with about 20k on it. I had a broken exhaust stud that needed to be removed plus wanted to repaint the frame. Aside from it being a complete bitch getting the engine out, I really only want to put it back in once and only mess up the painted frame minimally. It was...

Trying to make sense of this wiring, should I start from scratch?

So here's a quickish question, if i'm planning on a full rebuild, should i get it running good before i pull it apart or just start with the rebuild? I have the bike about 75% apart and since it's fall it's not getting ridden for quite a while anyways.

Trying to make sense of this wiring, should I start from scratch?

Got the harness out. Looks like there are only a few bad spots. Mostly a blue wire and a series of red's where it looks like a "fuse box" was added. So my re-wire is now a couple wire repair. All of the connectors are in great shape but I may switch a bunch out to something a little more modern.
