1977 XS400 Starter issue

Hello..

Just got a project bike for my son and I. Tackled a couple small wiring issues so far but haven't been able to get much information on replacing/rebuilding the starter on the 1977 xs400. It turns over the starter but doesn't engage the motor. Some times it will catch and work but mostly not. Hoping for some good help. Thanks

Sounds like it's the starter clutch. There are threads on this in the forum.

The wiring issue was the black wire from the voltage regulator had shorted on the frame and melted the insulation up the harness a ways.
