I'm a new member/rider/owner and I inherited a old Yamaha Maxim 400 1984 from my father in law. I have no mechanical training whatsoever with motorcycles but I've played around quite a lot in snowmobiles. I want to build a cafe racer with this bike, but I have yet to find a XS400J build. They are different because of their single shock rear suspension. Any thoughts, tips, ideas, howtos are more than welcome! I got it for free so I don't mind getting a bit adventurous and original.

Just start tearing it apart and making it how you like. I've got the same bike and am in the process of a cafe build. There's so much you can do to transform it before spending a dime. Here's a shot of mine before a proper seat and tucking all the cables and wires. Didn't cost anything to get this far
