Broke my oil filter cover and cant find new one

Thanks Lou Ranger - great points. Tharpe89 is hooking me up with a Kawasaki cover (thank you!), so I'm going to give that a shot. Once I get the old one off and am up and running I am going to give brazing it myself a shot to see how it goes. I'll post the results.

Broke my oil filter cover and cant find new one

Out of curiosity has anybody tested to see if a "clamshell" style will work on an 82 XS400? Seems like an obvious "probably not a good idea even if it seats" situation, but just wondering how much different they would be. With the abundance of them (and the scarcity of the flat disk type on the...

I might have to take you up on that...looks like they cancelled my order. I will PM you - Thanks!!

Broke my oil filter cover and cant find new one

I did the same thing on my last oil change on my 82 XS400 (11lbs of torque - lesson learned the hard way), and also have had no luck finding one on eBay, local wrecking yards, etc. There are a ton of the clamshell-type covers, but not these as far as I could find. I was considering just...

Swapping out the ignition lock assembly on an 82 XS400

I need to replace the lock assembly on my 82 XS400. Unfortunately the lock is fine, but the cast mount is broken. I'll include the sad picture shortly. I have found a few used ones on eBay, but I'm wondering if there is an upgrade I could do since I've got to replace it anyway. On the 82 it...

Replacing the throttle cable on an '82 XS400

That would be great ScottLuke. Now I'm just waiting for the cable. I will likely add a riser to the handlebars as well to get them off the tank and hopefully preventing the cable housing from breaking. Thanks for the tip on checking for binding too.

Replacing the throttle cable on an '82 XS400

Thanks JaredK. I took the seat off tonight to check it out - looks very straightforward. When I get the cable it *should* be a quick job. One thing I noticed - the reason the throttle housing busted is because when the PO replaced the stock bars with drag bars, the controls now hit the tank...

Replacing the throttle cable on an '82 XS400

Excellent - so it sounds like I don't need to drain the gas and disconnect hoses and such - just pull the seat so that I can get to the tank bolt (I need to look at the service manual when I get home to be sure - just guessing from previous experience), take that tank bolt out and then I can...

Replacing the throttle cable on an '82 XS400

You are correct JaredK - it's the housing. Here's a photo. Thanks for the tip - I should just do it to make it a little easier on myself :).

Replacing the throttle cable on an '82 XS400

I recently noticed on my '82 XS400 that the throttle seemed to be sticking a bit - sure enough, the throttle housing was broken at the handlebar end and "repaired" with some electrical tape by the previous owner (I've had it for a couple months or so). Rather than monkeying around with it to...

Photos of the inside of the turn signal housing

Thanks Highwaystar - great to know on the LEDs. Not great on the "looking for a short" :), because it sounds like a good possibility.

Photos of the inside of the turn signal housing

Ah - That sounds right - thanks BamaBill. I'm thinking that maybe I'll try to swap the signal system out for something that needs less power? LED lights maybe? Will have to dig around the forum to see what others have successfully done. I'm a new rider and don't need the distraction of turn...
