So I have read that different places that you can't powder coat the rear hub do to the rubber inserts. But also I have found some searches where people have had success with powder coating the hub. Just trying to see what peoples experiences here are with the hub. Also can those rubber inserts be pressed out?

Thanks for the input.

Hey Norman.....
If by the "rubber inserts" you mean the cush drive rubbers, you don't need to press them out....get the wheel off the bike, remove the brake plate and you can just take out the rubbers, they just sit in compartments in the rear hub.:)
I don't see why you could'nt powder coat the rear hub..someone else may know better though!!

I guess the technical name would be cush drive. The rubber inserts that hold the studs for the rear sprocket. Here is where I am thinking I can press them out.

and here is a picture of the studs for reference...

Thanks.

These are the parts you are talking about (new)

I guess it is difficult to remove them without destroying them. The metal cylinder is shrinked in and there is no place to use an extracting tool. I think it is easiest to get out the rubber first and then carefully cut the cylinder wall.
Anyway if I would spend the money for powder coating a hub, I would put in new dampers and bearings as well.

I know people who have powder coated hubs on their XS. It is possible:thumbsup:

PS: when they are old the rubbers fall out themselves:banghead:

Thank you for the info. Did those people who powder coated the rear hubs remove these cush drives? Can I press out the center from the other side where i put the arrows?

Thank you.

I can ask if I see them next time but that might take some weeks or month. It is winter :-( Time to hide in a garage.

I think it is possible to press them out. If you got the necessary tools:D

It was pia to "remove" these cush drives from my wheel...So I am not sure if it's possible to press them out and don't ruin them...
But I believe it's possible to powder coat the hub with cush drives...but you should be careful about temperature.

Thanks for the input. I was going to try to do them by myself, but was having some troubles last night. I gave up and decided to have them done professionally or worse comes to worse paint them with high quality paint.

Thanks again.

Don't remove them.

I powder coated my rim with those rubbers. Everything went fine and it works perfectly.
+ you don't have to spend money on new rubbers.

Awesome. That is what I wanted to hear. Again thanks for all the input. Calling around today to get quotes for the powder coating.

Any progress with this Norman? Planning on doing the same.

I too was worried about the Cush Drive rubber but I've seen so many that appear to be powder coated, I figure it has to be fine!

Well I just powder coated the rear hub last night and didn't see any ill affects with the heat to the rubber inserts. All is good.
