I've just got called to make the equivalent of the yearly DMV inspection. (It's called "besiktning" here in Sweden).
Then I read through the last inspection protocol and found that there is a remark on "cracks in front right engine mount". It will not pass another inspection without me fixing this first.

So my question is, do I just bring out my welder and fill up this/these cracks or is the correct way to do this to cut out the cracked piece and weld in a new piece? Any ideas?

Thanks, Stabler.

I am not an expert on this sort of things but I would say that your welder might know better on how to fix them.

That sounds about right. Grind a vee notch along the cracks to get good penetration. Grind down smooth. Redrill hole if needed.
Keep all the mounts tight.
One question, Are you running without the top mount? If so this is what can happen. Cases crack around the other mounts.

Thanks guys, but I haven't got to inspect it myself yet, been busy with my other scoot. I'll get under it later on tonight and get back with some details on as of where those/this crack really is.

Ok. Behold the "crack".

So I searched for this so called crack. The only thing I could find on or around the lower right engine mount that even resembles a crack was this:

From the other side:

No "crack" there..

And then I cleaned it up a bit. I swept it twice with a cloth and voila:

Now for the tricky question; could this really be what the inspector thought was a crack? If so - that dude needs to be fired.
I can't find any other marks or "cracks" anywhere. And yes the upper engine mount is fastened as it should be, as well.

Hit me up with some ideas so I know if I have to look further.

Thanks.

Nothing there mate this guy doesn't know what he's talking about it seems, the only crack i could see was the paint flaking off on the first picture. Have you checked the front engine mounts?

This is the right lower front engine mount - frame to engine. That what was looking like paint flaking, that disappeared when I rubbed it down with a cloth. Wasn't even paint flaking. Just a scratch in the dirt on it. I cant really find anything else..

Thanks for the input haga41cat.

did you check the actual engine case. that cast metal is sometimes pretty soft, and can be fairly hard to weld if its oil soaked

Yup, I've checked that to. No marks and no oil. I'm thinking that the only crack during that inspection was in the inspectors pipe.

:stupid:

It looks like its been welded on the frame mount, but it looks ok.

I had a porous casing even though I couldn't find anything it leaked oil when warm.

bought an NOS case for £1.50 (yes one pound fifty)

Did it fall off a back of a truck:laugh: I wish the u.s. ebay would have stuff like that!

it was on ebay at 99p advertised as a xs360 case. seeing as I'm the only one who knew it would fit I won the bid. I gave 50% more than I won it for :)

the guy was into kz750 twins and gave me a tour of his home workshop. great day out!
