Tail lights not working - have power and new bulbs

There are two separate circuits feeding the tail/brake light. One feeds power for running/tail lights and the other feeds off the brake switch. The bulb should be a dual element. In other terms look at the bulbs and you should see 2 separate coils that look like mini springs running...

    Broke my rusty nipple

Oh man from bad to worse. You could try to tap the new hole and using thread tape just put a plug in. Or bolt. But make sure it will not interfere with the piston travel. Then just use that new hole as your bleeder. When bleeding you will want to take caliper off bike place wood between pads and...

    Broke my rusty nipple

You can still try to salvage that caliper. There is a snap ring that holds the rubber for the piston just inside of the caliper. Remove it and pull the rubber boots off of the piston. Place a small piece of shim wood between the piston and back rest for the outer pad. Using a air gun put...

    Broke my rusty nipple

Those bleeders are always a pain I feel for you. I have never had much luck with extractors either. It seems they always break off or you just end up shaving metal to the max thread depth. I have thrown away all of my extractors and stick with a good set of left hand drill bits. Be sure to use a...

What did you do with your XS today?

My boy helped swap handlebars from the 79 to the 80. Pulled the front master cylinder because its leaking. Pulled the carbs for a good cleaning. Lastly found that with the fresh unbent handlebars the front wheel has a good right hand twist. Will be adjusting those tonight with the help of Neil...

    Finding sub model

I just recently purchased a 1980 xs400 from a friend, that like me does not know much. I am curious if there is a site or a spot in a manual where I can find the sub model for the bike (ex. Heritage, special, etc). The bike came without the side covers and may not make a difference what it...

    Synchronizing carbs

I understand you are suppose to use the special tool to sync the carbs. I don't see a problem with using my vacuum gauge. Now my question would be which intake to start with and how many inches am I looking for? I picked up 9in on the right carb and 4in on the left. I could not get any...
