Finding sub model

I just recently purchased a 1980 xs400 from a friend, that like me does not know much. I am curious if there is a site or a spot in a manual where I can find the sub model for the bike (ex. Heritage, special, etc). The bike came without the side covers and may not make a difference what it really is but being an enthusiast for classics I just have to know. Thanks in advance and as always you guys are a huge help and I appreciate it!

The first three letters of the vin will help you find out. In 1980 there was 3F9 and 3F8 which was the G and SG models. Sometimes also called the special-2 and special model.

It's a 3F9. So according to your post if reading correctly it would be a special-2?

Well I should have researched some more. I found the 3F9 in another thread and it showed as a special. Thanks for the help

Yes. Yours would have the mag wheels and a front disc brake.
