Remove the exhaust to change the tire?

This is a Maxim. I should have mentioned that. I did undo the exhaust collar (manifold gasket?) from the engine. It didn't give any significant movement to the exhaust pipe. That H connection is pretty tight.

Remove the exhaust to change the tire?

Would WD40 do as a penetrating lubricant, or would you suggest something else? Maybe something better at dissolving surface rust? Then just bang on it, maybe heat it, and keep on yanking, eh? The piece in the middle. Do you mean the metal gasket, liner-looking bit helping to seal the outer...

Remove the exhaust to change the tire?

Finally got that carb figured out, now to swap out the tires cuz these old ones won't hold air. It would appear that to remove the rear wheel, I need to remove the exhaust. And the manual doesn't mention this process; doesn't even mention the exhaust or muffler at all... Can I get some help...

Floats stick with vibration / Wrong bowls? Wrong carb?

OK. Thanks a lot for clarifying.

Floats stick with vibration / Wrong bowls? Wrong carb?

Yep, that's what I've been finding: Maxim and Seca (DOHCs) use these, which aren't quite the same as a BS34. Do you know what model these are, or are they also called BS34 despite the differences?

Floats stick with vibration / Wrong bowls? Wrong carb?

CARB ID What I find odd about these carb bowls, is that the bowls have that extra metal pug built into them, and not built into the carb body. Photos of other BS34s show the plug as being part of the body, and gaskets for the BS34 don't have a ring cut out for that plug, and I have to cut it...

Floats stick with vibration / Wrong bowls? Wrong carb?

Hey there. So I'm into the third month of trying to figure out what the devil is wrong with the carbs here. LEAKY NEEDLE VALVE - When I reassemble and clean everything, I hold the carb upside down and blow through the fuel intake. Or try to, can't get air through it to save my life. A good...

    Run away throttle - '80SG

I kept on fussing with the float height last night, and finally got the bike to run again. Man, those things are tedious: 1mm too low and the valve is always shut, 1mm too high and it dumps gas out the air filter. Is it supposed to be that way, or is that a side effect of my using floats other...

    Run away throttle - '80SG

I've been having this same problem as well. I cleaned the carbs, no problem there. That leaves 2 more solutions which I wanted to touch on. Mixture: Is the mix screw the same as the pilot screw, the one under the tamperproof seal? Given that it's still sealed, should I be messing with it...

How to get carbs back on?

Yeah, going into the manifolds and THEN bringing the filter housing forward, was the way to go. Knowing about the fender bolts, made all the difference in the world: impossible if you don't, simple if you do.

How to get carbs back on?

Thanks so much. The key was what you said "obviously" -- undoing the fender bolts. I wasn't seeing it right, thought the shock was in the way. But with the fender loosened, there's an extra inch of space, plenty of maneuvering room now. Thanks so much for the tip. I do appreciate it.

How to get carbs back on?

So, any advice on reinstalling carbs? It's a '82 XS400 Maxim. It's the usual scenario (fiasco?) that I can't slide the air filter housing back more than 1/8" because it's backed up against the rear fender and the unishock, and the carbs don't have clearance to fit in. I found a video advising...

Only four gears... that's not right

This 1982 XS400 Maxim only has four gears. 1 down, neutral, 2 up, 3, 4, ... No fifth. Too bad, it could use a fifth gear for speeds over 50. At first we just shrugged and accepted this, but now that I read up this definitely seems wrong. The Maxim is a five-speed, yes? (unlike other XS400s...
