This 1982 XS400 Maxim only has four gears. 1 down, neutral, 2 up, 3, 4, ... No fifth. Too bad, it could use a fifth gear for speeds over 50. At first we just shrugged and accepted this, but now that I read up this definitely seems wrong.

The Maxim is a five-speed, yes? (unlike other XS400s which are commonly 6) But from 4, there's nothing -- not a grinding, not a difficulty, just that it's already maxed out.

We read up a little bit, and it sounds this could be caused by a problem in the shifter or transmission: the dogs on the trans gears, shift forks, or shift drum. But I wanted to run it by y'all before I tear the thing down looking for a missing gear...
