1977 XS400 Won't Start Help!!

I just put my bike back together and can't seem to get it going. I have good spark and compression but it's not getting fuel. At first gas was pouring out of the airfilter spot while turning it over and then I adjusted the screw and it stopped puring gas out. After that I tried starting it again and it just keeps backfiring. I sprayed starting fluid in it and it backfired a huge flame. Any help would be great. This is also the second time I've cleaned the carbs.

Yank the carbs off and triple check the float heights. You shouldn't have fuel coming out of the carbs. And the screw you adjusted, which one?

Will do...i adjusted the main screw that goes to both carbs..basically the throttle idle screw.

That shouldn't have had any effect on the fuel leaking out. Just remember to turn it back to where it was.

The float heights can be found in the manuals at the top of the Garage forum.

do the floats spring back when you force them down and is the rubber inside the carbs look good. It sounds like something is really wrong in there if gas is flying thru them.
