So I have an 81' xs400.
I recently found that it started to sputter in all gears as well as a lot of backfiring. I have read some threads about it and all I really could find are carb issues. So I gutted the carb, cleaned the shit out of it and stuck it back in. It started and ran but still sputtered and backfired. After one ride it then died and now doesn't want to start up again. (Smells like gas after I try to start her up like im flooding it.) So I heard it might be a timing issue. So I did some research, watched a few videos and proceeded to try it on my bike. Drained the oil and took the points cover off to find out that it doesn't look the same as all the videos I've found. So my question is, has anyone else have the same issue with the sputtering and backfiring? And another question is does anyone have a video or something that will walk me through timing on this specific year? All help is appreciated. I am also going to douche my carbs again and check my float height next.
