Help with exact model identification

Hello guys!

I'm about to buy an xs 400 in a couple of days, but I would just like to clarify what exactly I'm buying. The bike is listed as a 1988 yamaha xs 400 (the same is in the paperwork), but it doesn't look like one, or does it?

If it's an older one, I might be able to ask the guy to lower the price.

Yes it is a XS400. I'm not sure where your from UA? In North America the last year for single overhead cam XS400 was 1982 but I am sure that Europe had them for a bit longer. Best way to tell is by the Vin#. Should also say on the head stock. Nice looking bike though.

Thanks! UA stands for Ukraine. But I don't think that this bike is from Europe as almost 90% of them get imported from Japan (used ones as well). Is there any full VIN database that I could check it's number against when I'll be around the bike?

You should download one of the servive manuals on this site. There usually is a list of VIN #s at the back of the malual.
