What are 400 Maxims going for?

I'm new to the list. I've rebuilt a couple of XJ bikes and have seen a number of ads for 400 Maxims. They seem like pretty nice bikes, especially for someone who doesn't want anything real big. I'm aware that they are 2 cylinder XS series cycles.

My question is, what are they selling for in decent shape and mostly original? I've got an opportunity to buy a non-running 1982 XS 400 Maxim for a couple of hundred bucks that looks pretty nice. The guy has done a fair amount of work on it, although it's missing the side covers on both sides.

Always a certain risk to buy a cycle that's not running so, for me, $100-200 is top dollar. I'd need to be able to resell it and make some money. What would be realistic for this bike once I've got it running well and polished up?

Thanks!

I bought mine in original condition for $800 with 3,600 miles on it. I don't know if that is the norm, but that is what happened to me.
