my 1980 xs400 wire harness is cob job all to hell and has extra orange wires added. i found a complete 1982 xs400 wire harness will that work on my bike? thanks for the help guys!

I'm pretty sure the '82 is the DOHC model and probably has a different wiring setup.
dohc is very different. there are nos wiring looms around (saw one at a show couple of weeks ago)

1977-1981 SOHC - Single Overhead Cam
1982-up - DOHC
NOS - New Old Stock
Wiring Loom - Wire Harness
Basically, different components, different wiring needs. You need to find a harness/loom from a 1980 or 1981 bike, which will have the wiring set up for the TCI (transistor controlled ignition). Or, make your own. Follow Drewpy's thread on rewire how to. He's doing a great job of explaining along with pictures.

alright cool that does help alot. i was wondering what years had the same wiring harness. and what the short hands terms meant. thanks man. and thank you for the thread i will read it.
