question .. I just got a stock 81 , and am totally green to bikes , your carbs dont have that rubber piece that goes to the big clunky air filters .. whats the deal ? also I got a set of air filters in a box full of parts that are cone shaped can the go on the carb wothout that rubber U shaped piece ? or even come off it where the stock filters go?
When I purchased my bike I never had the airbox, so I don't know what factory set up looks like to be honest. But I do know you can use pod filters, which im assuming that's what you have or the trumpets with a mesh inside it for keeping debris out. I will be running the the trumpets. Either or will affect your carbs a bit, so you may have to go up one or two sizes on your main jets. But it will run just fine after that is done. My setup is straight exhaust and open carbs(just the trumpets, no airbox) and 150 main jets and it runs like clock work. Hope that could help you out and congrats on the bike. They are alot of fun. If you want a daily runner keep it as brat or cafe with suspension in the rear. Bobbers are pretty, but not very friendly going over bumps or on the back. Cheers
