No Air Box, No Pod Filter, A Third Alternative?

Thanks guys. I'm going air box for now, managed to find some parts that weren't extortionate, I think rebuilding the intake as stock for now is the best. Especially as I'm hoping to run a non-stock exhaust.

Will an XS250 swing arm fit an XS400 SOHC frame?

So I managed to get my hands on an XS400 frame to go with the engine I am rebuilding, but I need a swing arm. Most on eBay come from old XS250s. I know some of the specials had longer swing arms, but it is the fitment, more than the length that I am concerned about. Cheers

No Air Box, No Pod Filter, A Third Alternative?

I am rebuilding an XS400 engine (see signature) and I do not have the Air Box, H-Pipe or Filters and they are expensive to get here in the UK (and they are ugleeeee!). I also don't want to try pods (K&N, Uni or otherwise) as this is my first engine build and I haven't even seen the thing...

    connecting rod bolts

I know this thread is almost 4 years old, so sorry mods if this is breaking forum etiquette. However, this is the first thread that comes up when you search "conrod bolts" and there seems to be a lot of misinformation here so I thought I would add some technical info to help clear things up...

Big End Bearing colour (again) discrepancy

I have measured the crankshaft for ovality with a mic and it is still in spec - I couldn't find the shaft size listed however. I don't really want to go down custom bearings tbh, I think it'll be safer to carry on with what exists. Thanks. Not to be a pedant, but if the crankshaft is ground...

Big End Bearing colour (again) discrepancy

Sadly, in the UK we don't really have that many automotive machine shops.

Rigidly mounting the engine and removing the cradle

Hey guys I'm not sure if there is a proper term for this - but has anyone rigidly mouted the engine and removed the lower tubes? Not necessarily intending to do this myself (would need a frame first!) but would be cool to see some pics if this is something some people have acheived. Ta x

Big End Bearing colour (again) discrepancy

So says the Haynes manual (and it says you may need to replace them) but the Yamaha manual doesn't - unless you have seen otherwise? It's kind of a moot point tbh as they are as rare as hen's teeth / rocking horse sh*t. I think I will go to the maximum torque (or one over) and hope for the best.

Big End Bearing colour (again) discrepancy

So managed to take some photos. I know it's tricky but what do you think?

Big End Bearing colour (again) discrepancy

Wow, thanks for all the information Mike that really helps. So just to be clear the bearings get thinner and the bore gets bigger as the numbers go up? I'm actually doing a 250 to 400 conversion, so a full rebuild was pretty much on the table anyway. I probably could have got away with not...

Big End Bearing colour (again) discrepancy

Hi All, So I have still got my engine in pieces and although the big end bearings are still in tolerance (just!) and aren't too scuffed up , I may as well replace them. I followed the instructions* to find the colour in the manufacturer's and Haynes manual and I need 2x Brown bearings. The...

    Gearbox layshaft oil feed "thingy"

Got it a bit more lubed up, it definately feels like it's not meant to come out as it stops very positively if that makes sense. I think I'm gunna leave it and get on with the rebuild. Wish me luck!

    Gearbox layshaft oil feed "thingy"

Following on from my sandblasting fiasco, I am doing as much of a deep clean as I can including washing out all the oil feeds. With that in mind, what is this in the attached pic and should I be able to get it out? I can lift it by about 5mm but then it stops dead. My guess is that it's a flow...

Sandblasted engine - possibly made a catastrophic f*** up!

Thanks guys - I took the parts to the painters and he wasn't put off by the dust. He said he would blow everything off with 14Bar of air before he starts anything. So I guess I'll just have to wait and see. I couldn't find any posts by a Tyler Shiel when searching - do you have a link?
