My Maxim runs about 11mph per 1000 rpm in 5th gear. So, 55mph at 5000 rpm. My speedo reads high, but I got the true speed using a speedo app on my phone.
I bought my 1982 Maxim last fall and, except for a short test drive before purchase, took first real ride a couple of weeks ago. I quickly realized the speedo seemed to be reading high. Check against gps confirmed it. Examples: 35 on the speedo is 30 on gps; 55 on speedo is 48 on gps.

Is it possible one carb is empty at startup, then when it fills and that cylinder kicks in the motor revs up? While it is initially idling, check to see if both headers are heating up evenly.
Without really thinking about it, I had just assumed the gap would widen over time -- cam wear or valve wear or both. Now my tight clearance makes sense. Thanks for the help.

As near as I can tell, no one has ever touched the valves. All bolts -- on the engine hangers, wire hanger and the valve cover -- showed no signs of ever being touched by a wrench or screw...
Thanks guys for the advice. I'll have the winter to think about it. The tire is a Kenda with date code 0818 and only a few hundred miles, so would be a decent used tire for someone. Not many choices on the market for a 3.00-19 or 90/90-19, must be an uncommon size.
