@Petew Hmm, I might have to do some serious thinking and a lot more riding before I make the leap to a longer rear suspension. Right now I feel like I am going to slide off the back under full acceleration, but it has also been a few years since I have ridden regularly, so it might just be I'm...

@xschris I tried that type, and probably didn't have enough hose since the engine sucked up the fluid and spit it out the instant it was hooked up, that is why I went with the bottle type, it gave me more time to adjust the carbs. I also discovered plastic bottles don't work for that same...

@bigdog Thanks, I will probably do just that once I have it running a bit more reliably and iron out the electronics. What kind of shocks did you put on yours? Do you have any pictures of it?

Carburetor nightmare; wasps+ wrong broken mixture screws on top broken mixture screws…

Thanks everyone. I've been working on the bike and done a lot to it now. I am just about broke so the new pilot screws will have to wait, in the mean time, I did something with the old pilot screws which might make some peoples head explode, or maybe it will give someone who is also in a jam...

So, I am guessing that I ordered the wrong mixture screw replacements? I ordered these ( https://www.mikesxs.net/yamaha-xs650-carb-mixture-screw-kit-80-84-bs-34-oem-12r-14105-00.html ) assuming that my carbs were compatible with them and assuming that the broken mixture screws were replacements...

Yeah, the wasp nest kind of freaked me out when it broke open. The mud/nest was super hard to clean off as well. Hope your's is easier to clean up than mine, I never realized wasp saliva (or whatever bodily fluid they use) is like epoxy. I also wanted to mention that after I got the mixture...

The 81 XS400 has been parked since late August when I rode it to its new home and parked it in my basement. It has never run particularly well, and has always had idle problems according to PO because it had to be tuned to the 2-1 exhaust. When I went to remove the carbs, I thought they looked a...

Introduction and my 81 XS400 project

Thanks got20z and xschris. Luckily, the bike runs so I am going to start with the basics; oil, filter, valve adjustment, carburetor cleaning and adjustment,... then it will be on to the customization, which will probably lean toward a scrambler style. This form has been a great source of...

Introduction and my 81 XS400 project

I've been lurking here for a bout a year so I figured it was past time for me to introduce myself. I have had my current bike for about a year now and have ridden it on and off, but it needs some TLC, and it needs to fit my environment a bit better. It was the PO's cafe project, but what I need...
