not an easy frame to chop

Thanks guys. I'd like to see a pic of that tank fxrjockey.I took some pics of the top tube , or tubes, of my frame this evening so I could spend some time planning what to do. Right now I'm thinking about hooking onto the center tube , which measures 1.25 inches od. I might fit some 1.25...

not an easy frame to chop

I'm kinda stuck with using what I have. I don't want the hassle of searching for another bike to start with. It took me quite a awhile to find the xs400 I have. However , after some looking at my frame and pictures of others, like xs650s , I realize that xs400 frames are more difficult than most...

    hardtailing without a frame jig

I had decided that the best way to weld on a hardtail without having a frame jig was to extend the swingarm, leave it in place and build the hardtail around it , then cut out the swing arm. Are there any good pictures that I may have not found, of a hardtail being done that way? Thanks

    planning ahead for frame mods

I've been thinking about one of the hardtail kits discussed on here for my bike. The tubing I would need to make my own costs almost what the kit sells for and I would have to find someone to bend it. However, with the tank off of my bike for the first time I'm looking at the top tube , thinking...

I actually quit looking at other people's projects long enough to make some progress on mine this afternoon. I think it's looking better already. All I removed today unbolted. Nothing in the parts pile in the last pic is going back on. In an earlier post I said that I thought...

    tire & wheel size

The more I look, the more I like the looks of the front & rear tire being the same size.I'm wondering how hard it would be to find a wheel rim that I could put on the front of my '80 model 400 to match the rear.I'm heading out to count the holes in the rims now and to see if the front spokes can...

    what inspired you?

I had never really paid much attention to bobbers , although I have ridden motorcycles in the past . Most of my experience was on trail bikes and dual-purpose bikes. About a year ago I was driving through town , minding my own business, and saw one of the little Kicker bobbers for sale. I...

Let's see if I can post a "before" pic or two of my bobber in it's pre-bobbed state... Ain't it a beaut? I'm anxious to get started on it.I plan on taking plenty of pics as I go. I've learned a lot from this site and others in the last few months.I'm sure I'll have a lot more questions when I...

We had severe storms last night so I burned up all my daylight this evening cleaning debris out of my yard and driveway.A neighbor and I had to cut up some large pine trees that fell across "our" street to get out and go to work this morning. Dang , I wanted to be messing with my new toy...

Actually I went and got my bike this evening. With title in hand I realize that it is a 1980 model , not an 82. Oh well, the owner insists that the 4600 miles showing on the odometer is correct.I will take some pics tomorrow in daylight.

Hello, I just discovered this site tonight. I've been wanting to build a bobber style chopper for some time now. I finally found what I think will work for me. It is a 82 model 400 Special. The bike runs , has less than 5000 miles on it and came with a clear title! I'm sure I'll be spending some...
