What exactly do I have here?

I got them to open with right click and "Open in new window" That's a SOHC model but beyond that I have NO idea. I'm an FNG here too.

Edit: Got another open. Looks like the XS400SH listed in my manual. Mine was a 1981 XS400H base model, drum fronts and spoke rims. I would guess somewhere around the same year, but just a guess.

Yep 81 going to need a lot of work by the looks of it  Good luck, it would be nice to see another one saved:thumbsup:

Oh man, i didn't expect this many replies. I got the number from the frame and engine. I'm not sure if it's SOHC or DOHC, I would look but its up at my cottage. Here's a couple pictures of it to help out.

It's a SOHC and I agree with XSCHRIS on around 1981. I am not convinced that it is a Heritage Special as it has too much chrome on it. I would have expected the fenders, guages, foot pegs, etc. to be painted black on a Hertiage Special. Of course on a 30+ year old bike who knows how many Bubbas have had their fingers on it.

Hello Everyone,

This is my first post on the site. I too have a XS400 with a 4T4 VIN which from my research makes it a Heritage Special (unofficial). It is stamped on the right side of the steering lug. I got my bike with a used vehicle package saying it has had 4 owners all in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada (were I currently reside). It is an 81 and I have searched the name of the original purchaser. He still lives here and teaches at the college that I do some training at occasionally. I will try to get in touch with him to see if he knows anything about where it was manufactured. Pictures to follow.

Welcome to the forum. Love that UVIP in Ontario, it's not infallible but sure makes a lot of people honest.

I have done a little more research and it appears that "4T4" is a code for a 1981 XS400SH, but oddly so far it has only shown up in Canada that I know of. It may designate a bike for export to Canada only where they had to meet a different standard for Transport Canada than they did in the U.S. It was around that time period when U.S. and Canadian vehicle standards started diverging a little.

I think they were only manufactured in one place but if you do get in touch with the original owner ask him if he remembers it having a lot if black and minimal chrome when it was new.

Oh yeah, don't forget those, we love pictures.

Yep and i just confirmed it with a Yamaha dealer. Im still going to try to get in touch with the original owner to ask what is official title was when he bought it and if he has any pictures floating around. He must if he owned it for 12 years. I cant wait to start working on this. Ill start a new thread and put a link on here to it that will follow the rebuild. does this mean it is a SOHC or a DOHC engine? I cannot find any specifications on this model as the manual only goes up to xs400-h.

Well I've owned my xs400 for a few years and just ride it back and forth to work.....short trips. Just recently I've decided to start restoring it but am really curious exactly what model I have here. My vin is 4R5-009596. I've tried a few sites but all were dead ends. Any Ideas would be welcomed.....Thanks:thumbsup::thumbsup:

My list shows 4R5 as 1981 XS400H.

If I had to guess I would say it might have originally had "Special" on the side covers but I have no additional information on 4R5 other than what I have given you here.
