Well that didn't seem to work. I guess i'll give it some time.
Oh man, i didn't expect this many replies. I got the number from the frame and engine. I'm not sure if it's SOHC or DOHC, I would look but its up at my cottage. Here's a couple pictures of it to help out.
For 500 bucks you cant beat itYep 81 going to need a lot of work by the looks of it Good luck, it would be nice to see another one saved
Hello Everyone,
This is my first post on the site. I too have a XS400 with a 4T4 VIN which from my research makes it a Heritage Special (unofficial). It is stamped on the right side of the steering lug. I got my bike with a used vehicle package saying it has had 4 owners all in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada (were I currently reside). It is an 81 and I have searched the name of the original purchaser. He still lives here and teaches at the college that I do some training at occasionally. I will try to get in touch with him to see if he knows anything about where it was manufactured. Pictures to follow.
Welcome to the forum. Love that UVIP in Ontario, it's not infallible but sure makes a lot of people honest.
I have done a little more research and it appears that "4T4" is a code for a 1981 XS400SH, but oddly so far it has only shown up in Canada that I know of. It may designate a bike for export to Canada only where they had to meet a different standard for Transport Canada than they did in the U.S. It was around that time period when U.S. and Canadian vehicle standards started diverging a little.
I think they were only manufactured in one place but if you do get in touch with the original owner ask him if he remembers it having a lot if black and minimal chrome when it was new.
Oh yeah, don't forget those, we love pictures.
