New to the forum and the world of xs400's. Just bought a 82 xs400 maxim. Looking forward to making a inexpensive bobber. I see everyone using square tube to replace monoshock. Was wondering the reasoning behind this? Was thinking about leaving my shock on. Any and all input would be greatly appreciated. Eager to start tearing down. Just need to know some intel on this hard/soft tail topic. Thank you

I used square tube with 2 sets of height holes.. Basically for over all aesthetics and stance..and also for more seat/stance options. I am springing my seat because I still value my back especially the long rides

Cool. Thanks. Just wasn't sure if it was only for looks and old school ways or if you had to for some mechanical reason. I'm 6'4 280 so was hoping to keep shock on. Has anyone on here left the mono shock on?

I think most people modifying a Maxim/Seca keep the shock. Riding a hardtail is brutal and not something you are going to ride all day. Another option when modifying, is to use a shorter monoshock to get the look you want, and besides you don't see the shock anyways.

Anyone have any pics of a maxim bobber? Would really like some detailed ones of the rear end and seat setup

I appreciate the link to Google. I have searched through all of them already. Was hoping to see more detailed ones that focused more on each section of the bike. Like pics taken during the build not just finished projects.

Here is a pic:)

Hoping to liquidate most of the wiring and hide the rest. Also want to keep the airbox for now but was wondering if I cut the mufflers off and extended pipes would I have to rejet carbs.

Of course you would have to re-jet. You will also hurt the performance of the engine by running straight pipe instead of mufflers.

That sucks. I have built evrything else on this earth when I had my shop but a motorcycle. I'm green as a blade of grass in june when it comes to motorcycle engines.
