Wont start, not even a cough.

I don't know about that,i jump started my xs when I first bought from a truck now I have bookoo electrical problems could be a coincidence or damage was done and didn't show up until I started riding the bike more.If you read my ignition thread theres a part in there where I had to replace the little fuse that's part of the wiring harness. It possible could have been fried when I jump started or maybe something else caused it.Ive read this over many times that you don't want to use a vehicle to start your xs cause of too many amps going through the electrical system.

Using just a truck battery is fine. But doing it while the truck is running not so much. Your bike battery can't take a 90 amp charge well. Lots of people do it as a quick start and then off the wires go. Also the charging and other components that are 35+ years old won't like it. :wink2: The bike turns ac to dc ( rectifier does this) a small fan is ac and 120 volts :)

Okay, here's an update... Drained the fuel from the carbs and tanks. Removed the carbs, disassembled them, cleaned with brake cleaner and blew out the passages with the compressor. Reassembled everything, added fresh 91 octane, removed and cleaned the plugs, replaced the plugs. Still nothing. Tried kick starting, noticed the occasional small wisp of exhaust from the pipes when kicking the bike over but that's it. Also noticed that when kick starting, the rear wheel turns ever so slowly. Is this normal, or a sign I've misadjusted then clutch. The wheel does not turn when using the electric start.
Not a great weekend as far as powers ports. The wife and I launched the jet ski on Friday, a 2010 1600cc, and guess what... No go...bad starter, which I only discovered after dropping 175 on a new battery.

Are the plugs wet? The wheel turning is normal. The thick 20w-50 oil will cause the clutch to grab a bit when cold. If the bike was off the center stand you would never tell that it does it.

Success!!!! After draining the gas, cleaning the carbs, and lastly replacing both plugs and changing the oil she started up midway through the first kick. Thanks to everyone here who offered guidance, it's a real confidence booster to have knowledgeable people to fall back on. A final question to close off this thread. When changing the oil, I used the drain port at the left side bottom of the crankcase. I noticed that there is also a port on the bottom of the case. Is there a reason for the multiple drain ports? Did I use the correct one? I reviewed the manual but the image on my phone was alittle low res so hard to distinguish.

The bottom plug is the 'drain' per the book. The side port is OK, but you don't get 'all' the old oil out. Just refill to the right level and you will be fine until the next OC. Ride on, my brother!

Use the bottom plug. If you have never done it before it is a good idea to drain the sump and clean the screen. It is also on the bottom. It is the cover with 6 small bolts in it. Be careful taking them off and putting them on as they can break easy. The torque is like 5-7lbs.
