Tank swap question.

I have a '79 xs400F with the tear drop style tank... I'm interested in changing it to the more boxy older xs400 tank. My question is will this open up a can of worms or will it fit without any modifications? I've noticed some of the boxy more cafe style tanks have dual petcocks where my current tank only has the one, so I guess that is one minor hiccup.

Any information on how easy or difficult this will be is greatly appreciated!

boxy tanks don't have twin petcocks.

there may be a small rear mount issue depending on your original model.

i have the same bike that you do with the same tank and i'm in the middle of negotiating a swap right now with another member on this forum. his bike is a '77 and as far as pics and measurements go, it looks to be fairly painless. i can let you know how it goes. Andrew is right: the tank i'm getting only has a single petcock.

The boxier tanks with dual petcocks are probably XS750 tanks.

yeah, I've got a xs500 tank with 2 petcocks too

Its actualy quite easy to mount the boxy style tanks in place of the tear drop.Cut the mount off and weld it back on about 2 inches more forward.Make sure you get the exact measurement
