What did you do with your XS today?

    Thanks for the heads-up Dave.

What did you do with your XS today?

Thanks Tobie, this is great information. I'll definitely use this when I get into my carbs for the first time. It looks like given the temperature range we have here, I'd need to have a summer setup and a not summer setup. Ditto if I want it to run well from my house at about 3000 feet to the...

What did you do with your XS today?

The old girl took this old girl up the mountain - part way. The bike couldn't handle the climb and altitude very well. It only went about 45 mph at 7000 RPM. I turned around at about 5500 feet above sea level. It's probably time to clean the carbs, but I wonder how well it will do then? It...

Thanks for the encouragement! Chris, if I can get something dirty, I will, so thanks for the warning. Hope I remember to cover it when working on it :)

    YAMAHA XS400 12E restoration

The chrome looks great. I've been working on mine with steel wool and some aluminum foil and water. Those Secas are looking good!

    Vegas Newbie Resto 82 Seca

I got my seat re-covered. I'm still on the fence about the red, but I love the white. It gets too hot here for an all black seat. It's got a little better padding now too.

    81 XS400 Build

Love the paint scheme. It's great that you can do that yourself. Condolences on your loss.

Front Brake Not Right, But Why

Thanks flutterball, I've been thinking about what to do with the brake line, so it's good to hear what you did. Good advice on the master cylinder too.

What did you do with your XS today?

Adjusted the chain and clutch cable, and then took it for a ride. I'm getting better, but still need work on cornering.

What did you do with your XS today?

I had my forks resealed and put new oil in last week and what a difference in the ride. I couldn't get the circlip out though and had to take them to the shop. <hangs head in shame> Yours look good and it's nice to see what I misse :)

    Vegas Newbie Resto 82 Seca

That makes me feel better - thanks levdir. I did check it after today's ride and it wasn't hot. And no leaks! Took it for a ride and it was so much smoother with the forks having new oil and seals. It was pretty windy so I got buffeted about, but when not getting blown around, it was a...

    Vegas Newbie Resto 82 Seca

Got the tank etched and lined and I never, never, ever want to do that again. Nasty chemicals and trying to drain them through the tiny hole for the petcock was not fun. While the tank was off I checked the valves. Couldn't get the wire harness guide off, so I couldn't get the valve cover all...

Thanks Chris. I was thinking a pump might be the only way to get the last bit out.

    Vegas Newbie Resto 82 Seca

Figured I'd take the plunge and start a thread for the restoration of my '82 Seca. I'm a brand new rider and this is my first motorcycle. I wanted something that I could work on and maybe customize. There's a ton of great info on the forum and it's encouraged me to try some things that I...

What did you do with your XS today?

Ordered some more parts and a tank cleaning / sealing kit. Replaced the air filter. Will have to clean and synch the carbs after the tank cleaning... Thinking that since I'm going to have my tank and forks off, that I might as well take the bike down to sand and paint the frame. Then clean...

How to rebuild your leaky or starving petcock

Hadn't thought about sealing the tank - thanks for the recommendation. There's very little rust observable from the main opening at the gas cap, but that doesn't mean there isn't any over at the petcock. I'll get a closer look when I have it off and see if the shop down the block does it.

Front Brake Not Right, But Why

Welcome to the forum! I did get a couple of sizes of screw extractors yesterday and got the screw out. I'll put the set on my list. Since I'm new, why don't you use spray on brake cleaner?

Front Brake Not Right, But Why

I put it all back together, bled the brakes and adjusted the cable. All nice and tight now. It looks like I'll need 2 stainless steel hoses for this bike. There's a short one from the MC to a gizmo just under the handle bars, and then another from the gizmo to the caliper. Wonder why they did...

Front Brake Not Right, But Why

I think the master cylinder is in good shape - haven't seen anything to indicate otherwise other than really gross fluid that I replaced. I'll bled the system again once I get the screw out - thanks for the tip on where to get new ones. I read on another thread that the brake lines can...
