Please Help My Engine Wont Start

Battery strong enough? Cables to the ignition relay thick enough? After a rebuild I always start it from a large car battery. In my experience little battery's run out pretty quickly.

Right cylinder not firing (issue with points?)

Hello, Over the last 2 years I've build a custom XS400 (café inspired). I have simplified/shortened all the wiring of the bike and use a motogadget M-unit to control everything. Aesthetically the bike is just about finished. However, the bike starts up but will only run on the left cylinder...

    H-PIPE

Hi guys, well, I removed the airpods yesterday and fitted the H-pipe. I think it still look killer, even with the H-pipe. My filters (UNI PK92) don't fit on the H-pipe though, I'll need some PVC pipe to clamp onto and also to fill in between the H and the pods. Not much to do while waiting for...

    XS400 Custom from Belgium

Concerng the M-unit, I think it's a great product. Great idea and well executed. A little expensive but a truly great product. Advantages - simplifies the wiring a lot - very thin wires possible for controls, you can run these through the handlebars for a clean look - possible to control with...

    H-PIPE

Hi Guys, As you can see in my other thread I'm almost finishing my custom XS400. I wanted a café-racer styled bike with a clear/empty triangle with normally houses the airfilters and battery on a stock bike. All my electronics are mounted invisibly inside a custom built seat-pan. All cables...

1981 XS400 Engine Build: A Story of Pictures, Videos, Beers & Tears

WoW. Loosing the H-pipe and sticking pods directly to the carbs can cause a piston to melt?? I've read some advice against it, that the bike runs better with the H-pipe... but that it can destroy the enfine if you run it without?? I'm just finishing my bike and left the H-pipe out. I'd thought...

Seat and Tank are at the painters! Should be ready in a week or two! After that I just need to have a cushion made for the seat, or just ride it like that :)

    XS400 Custom from Belgium

I'm getting close to a finished bike! The TO DO list can finally fit on one page. Also ordered the (hopefully) last parts (keylock switch to fit the opening I designed under the seat, oil for front break, new oil filter for bike (already had one but got lost during rebuild of the engine), new...

    XS400 Custom from Belgium

Everything seems to work, starter motor turns; but haven't run the engine with the new wiring. Will need to wait to see if everything works (correct ignition sequence, alternator, ..). Was fed up with the wiring and started with the exhaust pipes. The bike was ended up on the pavement a few...

    XS400 Custom from Belgium

Next I mounted lights, indicators and started wiring everythinig to the outputs of the M-unit. And also mounted the rev counter on its custom bracket. Also repainted the rev conter and changed the bolts to shiny new ones. I tried my best to keep everything as clean as possible, but still...

Hi Guys, sorry I didn't update here in a while, but I'm still building this bike! We went on holiday in April and was busy with work before and after... now finally more time to work on the bike and post progress. This is from the beginning of the year. Engine is finally done and back in the...

    XS400 Custom from Belgium

I think i'll just try it out this way, i can always fit the H later if I do run into problems. But at the moment it seems to idle like a kitten.

    XS400 Custom from Belgium

One more update! I was excited to get my frame back, so I bought some new parts for my bike. I should have all the major components now, except for new fancy design expensive brake and clutch lever with built in buttons for the M-unit. Since the engine has turned out so much better then I...

    XS400 Custom from Belgium

I've had some problems with the powdercoating company. I called them up and asked if they did bike frames and tanks and stuff like that. They sed it was no problem I could come by and drop it off whenever I wanted. When i did a few days later, they were friendly and let me pick out a color and...

    XS400 Custom from Belgium

Here is the engine all complete and fitted with its pods air filters. I originally meant to use the original H, but had a brain fart and ordered the wrong size pods. But even without proper tuning, the engine seems to idle fine, even with the new exhaust.

    XS400 Custom from Belgium

Since my last post we have been busy at rebuilding the engine. Cleaning 30 years of junk and oil, new gaskets, tuning the valves, setting the ignition timing, etc... and also a lot of cleaning. On the outside more cleaning, filing out a big scratch and some medium polishing. Looking very good...

    XS400 Custom from Belgium

I think it depends on your comfort level with both materials and on the shape of your seat. If it is boxy then I think alumium would be fairly easy.. if you want a rounded shape like mine then I think, depending on how good you are with aluminium, that fibreglass is easier for a beginner. Good luck!

    XS400 Custom from Belgium

This was just to get it running and idling. Now I'm ordering a new gasket set and everything that should be replaced in this stage. I don't think there are any huge issues with the engine. But offcours you never know untill you ride it for a few hours.
