    Xs400 budget build

I have a gasket kit and yamabond for the rebuild, and I was going to try the stealership for the con rod bolts.I don't see any visual issues to warrant junking the engine, so if I'm out 100 dollars on gaskets, con rod bolts and rings thanI'd rather not shell out 500 on a new engine. But if I...

    Xs400 vs 1100 ?

It's a great bike for the price. The engine has jam nut valve adjustment (no shims!) and it's a very comfortable ride, I put 700 miles on mine in a weekend no problem. They are also not that desirable for modifying so they are normally easy to find stock. they are not as fast as say a hayabusa...

Ok thanks, by head studs I mean the long studs that attach at the case and hold the cylinders and head in place. I didn't know if those were torque yield studs or not.

    Xs400 vs 1100 ?

A dirt cheap bang for your buck bike is the Suzuki bandit 1200, I picked mine up for 2k. It has plenty of power, very nimble for its size, capable brakes, and the engine has been used in the gsxr line since the 80s. The bike is practically bullet proof and won't disappoint in the canyons.

    Xs400 budget build

so I picked up a 1981 xs400 heritage special 2 in trade for a bbq. The po told me the engine was ruined due to a poor top end rebuild where he used high temp rtv on everything causing the low oil light to kick on .so I decided to tear the engine down to get to the bottom of the issue. I found no...

That random part is a broke valve.

Low HP and slow throttle response

Also setting timing is way easier than tearing apart carbs.

Low HP and slow throttle response

Sounds like timing to me, when they replaced your valves they had to pull the pickups and cam. Thus the reason you have to reset timing. like stated above rotate the pickup plate to adjust. What do your plugs look like, and again like stated above check compression. Also check your plug gap.

    XS400E Wiring Troubles S.O.S.

Yeah, strip it bare where the contact is on the starter switch. Or you can replace your starter switch with an aftermarket one and run a ground to the frame.

    XS400E Wiring Troubles S.O.S.

had the same issue with my xs850. It was because I had painted bars so the ground wasn't being completed. Like napalm said, check your grounds.
