For Sale - 1979 XS400 gas tank 3,000 original miles

Selling probably one of the nicest tanks I've seen in a very long time. Came off my 3,000 original mile xs400 cafe project. Swapped to a 360 tank and then sold the bike. Tank has 3 very small hard to notice dings. Badges have been removed by PO. Inside is clean as can be. I removed the cap...

    winding noise during startup

Ok still trying to learn as much as I can about this little thing so bear with me. Honestly the noise doesn't really bother me as long as it can't hurt anything, I can live with it. I have no problem going to kick start only but would I still need to address the issue? I think I read that some...

    winding noise during startup

I'm getting a winding noise when I try and start my bike, kick or electric makes no difference. It sometimes does it when I shut the bike off as well. This is not my video but mine is making the same sound. Now It seems as if I am not the only one to encounter this issue anyone know what it is...

    headlight diode question

It's been a while since I did this but I removed the headlight relay, there was no reason to keep the wire containing the diode so I terminated it pretty close to that point. Without knowing what has been done to it exactly I would just leave it be, doesn't seem to be causing you any issues. If...

    headlight diode question

That diode is for the incoming charge from the alt to the headlight relay which switches on the headlight once the bike is started. Since your headlight is coming on when you turn the key on it would seem that the P.O bypassed the whole thing. I wouldn't worry too much about it, I bypassed mine...

    New xs400 problems.

My bigger mains came in, threw in the #150 and it didn't really change anything. I also tried to add a couple washers under the needle to see if that would help but it didn't solve the bucking issue either. The bike did seem to run better in the midrange but struggled from a stop until i gave it...

    New xs400 problems.

Re-routed the exhaust for the last time I think, scrambler style. This seems to have fixed alot of the issues I was having. I've seen others do this as well, anyone find a creative and somewhat cheap way to make a heat shield? I do plan on wrapping them at some point but since that will be a new...

ignition points and condensers for 81 xs400 special

Let me rephrase that, it should have electronic ignition. They started the electronic ignition in 1980. I suppose if the motor has been swapped out at some point it could have points/condenser or if someone converted it to points/condenser (wouldn't make as much sense). I would imagine you can...

ignition points and condensers for 81 xs400 special

You have electronic ignition, its all controlled through your tci. You shouldn't need to mess with it.

    New xs400 problems.

I got around to really working on the bike today. Checked valves, the left side had to be adjusted but the right was ok. I also put the new battery in, rode it around the block and I can feel a huge difference. It revs up alot easier, still haven't really taken it too much higher than 4k. I...

    Rear wheel sprocket dampers

Well I guess the spoke wheels are different, mine don't have those things. So technically I wasn't completely wrong, it looks like the studs are part of the hub on the spoke wheels. Maybe try and find some cheap spoke wheels?

    Rear wheel sprocket dampers

I know what you are referring to as my kz's have them but I wasn't aware that the xs400's did. On both of my 400's the sprocket just bolts to the hub.

    Lets see those Handlebars...

I started out with drag bars but soon realized how much I liked clubmans. Made these from a set of stock bars I think, I have a tote full from various bikes.

    Start Button Issues

There should be a black wire in the loom that runs up into the controls. It connects to the main harness probably somewhere in the headlight bucket. I had the same problem and it turned out the ground had come out of the female connector. If for some reason there isn't one, add one.

    New xs400 problems.

Finally got my tach cable in and all hooked up. Now I've been real easy on this bike since I got it running, pretty much shift to 6th and cruise. I was always under the assumption that I was running it pretty high up in the rpms. I've come to find out that's not the case. So far I have only been...

How street legal should I be?

I say do whatever makes you feel comfortable. I can imagine it could take the fun out of riding if your always worried and looking over your shoulder wondering if your going to get pulled over. I personally don't run signals, gauges, mirrors and I have open exhaust. It helps mine is registered...

Gear mother f'r! Do you wear it?!

Its well over 100deg here with a high humidity. If they would let me ride naked I would. I normally ride in shorts/t-shirt/shell toes.

    Brake Light Wiring Issues

Yellow is brake, blue is running light. You only need one of the blue wires not both.
