That diode is for the incoming charge from the alt to the headlight relay which switches on the headlight once the bike is started. Since your headlight is coming on when you turn the key on it would seem that the P.O bypassed the whole thing. I wouldn't worry too much about it, I bypassed mine...

You have electronic ignition, its all controlled through your tci. You shouldn't need to mess with it.

Well I guess the spoke wheels are different, mine don't have those things. So technically I wasn't completely wrong, it looks like the studs are part of the hub on the spoke wheels. Maybe try and find some cheap spoke wheels?

I know what you are referring to as my kz's have them but I wasn't aware that the xs400's did. On both of my 400's the sprocket just bolts to the hub.

There should be a black wire in the loom that runs up into the controls. It connects to the main harness probably somewhere in the headlight bucket. I had the same problem and it turned out the ground had come out of the female connector. If for some reason there isn't one, add one.
