    Xs400 noisy valve train.

Well, changed out plugs, and she fires On both cylinders. Should have know that free sitting for so long shed foul plugs easy. However, loud tapping is still there. Another issue I've noticed, tach doesn't like to move to much. Goes very slowly up to like2k and hangs. Defiantly doesn't match...

    Xs400 noisy valve train.

Also, we synced the carbs, with low vacuum at the shop. Then noticed the carb boots were cracked. So it must have been running on both cyls to sync carbs, right? Did putting on the new boots throw this sync way out of balance? Could this ticking be so loud because of the only running on 1 cyl?

    Xs400 noisy valve train.

The bike is a 1980 xs400g. The bike was noisy before, but i jsut kind of assumed it was the loose clearances. It seems its noisier now, but that may just be a placebo. Ill check float heights when i get a chance. Im just worried of a burnt/bent valve or something of the like.

There is spark. There is fuel. The ticking is the problem here.

    Xs400 noisy valve train.

This is a much louder tick then from thin oil I believe. I had the carbs professionally cleaned, and that wouldn't cause a ticking so I doubt thAts it. And yes, I set valves to spec from the manual.

    Xs400 noisy valve train.

So, got my bike all buttoned up. Starts great, and then there's a problem. Very loud ticking coming from the top end. I just set the valve clearences in spec. I notice, the right pipe is only warm after 1 min of running. Left pipe is hot though. What would cause this? Bike has 991 miles...

Thanks for the post! I went and checked it out saturday and we did a comp test. Pulled 144 and 152. So i think its a go. Has anyone had luck with ultrasonic cleaners from harbor freight? What about boiling in lemon juice?
