    Bike won't start after rebuild.

Oh and for the kill switch I just turn the key to kill the bike. You could wire in a simple toggle switch between the power line and the key switch to make a kill switch.

    Bike won't start after rebuild.

It's just a simple switch from a auto parts store. Has four positions on back. Ignition, Batt, Accesories, and the one in the middle is for the start. Here is a link to one. http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/detail/CTI0/85936.oap?ck=Search_key+switch_-1_3229&keyword=key+switch I hate doing...

    Yamaha XS400 Wiring Diagrams

Yeah that would probably be a good place to add some fuses. You are correct. There is no starter button because the key switch replaces that. It is a spring switch. Similar to how you would start your car.

    Yamaha XS400 Wiring Diagrams

Below is a diagram for the bike I just wired up. Simple basic wiring using a four position spring return key switch. (Like a car ignition). You would probably want to add some more fuses or breakers but this should get you to a point of starting.

    Bike won't start after rebuild.

So I think I finally got this bike all wired up correctly. Man what a nightmare this one was. The bike now starts with both electrical and kickstart and is charging the battery. Just need to finish up a couple small things and it should be ready to ride. I'll post some pics once it's light out...

Wiring 3 position spring return key switch

I had originally started this question in a different thread but it doesn't really belong in the carb thread anymore and I wasn't sure how to move it so I started a new thread here. Sorry if thats the wrong way to do it. So I rewired the bike with just the basic stuff needed and using a 3...

    Bike won't start after rebuild.

So I wasn't getting power to the coils when the key was turned to on only when the key is turned to start the bike. The starter relay has a red/white and blue/white coming off of it. Blue/White is hooked to the start post on the switch. I attached a jumper from the starter relay red/white to the...

    Bike won't start after rebuild.

The type of switch is a four position spring return switch similar to a car ignition. I've used these same switches on other bike and it's nice because it combines the key, kill and star button in one but I always forget how these are wired. I think I have it correct. It is wired how it is in my...

    Bike won't start after rebuild.

Yes there is definitely a wiring issue. This is a silly question but what supplies power to the spark plug once the bike is running and you are not pushing the start button anymore?

    Bike won't start after rebuild.

So I think the reason the stater kept spinning is because the switch would get stuck on the open turn position. I don't think the bike was actually running it was like the start button was stuck pushed down (or the key being turned in my case). Replaced the switch and it doesn't get stuck on now...

    Bike won't start after rebuild.

I also switched my key ignition. It is a turn key like in a car. Thinking maybe I had a faulty switch I replaced it with another I had laying around but it is doing the same thing. Starter motor still running when the bike is running.

    Bike won't start after rebuild.

Ok so some good news. I had the carbs and air box off and tried starting the bike and sparyed starting fluid in the intake boots and it started to start up. So I figured it must be the carbs. Since I had them off I re-adjusted the float height to 26mm and made sure it was exact. Put them back on...

Can someone measure something for me?

What xschris said. I lost one when I rebuilt my carbs. You can drill out the grease fitting and the ball will work for the choke slide.

    Bike won't start after rebuild.

I sprayed starter fluid in each spark plug hole and tried to start it. Gave a little pop and then that was it. So I'm getting spark when they are screwed into the motor.

    Bike won't start after rebuild.

Yeah I'm guessing it's the electrical too since it did get fully rewired. I get spark with the plug out but is there a way to check if it is still getting spark under compression? I have already tried switching the coil wires but that didn't seem to make a difference. I'll have to go through the...

    Bike won't start after rebuild.

Yes they were all removed and cleaned with carb cleaner and I made sure all of the holes were clear. I also removed the slide and needle and made sure that was clean also. I adjusted the floats back to 26 but that didn't make a difference unfortunately. This bike is driving me crazy. I've...

    Bike won't start after rebuild.

As long as I have the carbs off I will adjust them back to the 26mm. I'm running stock airbox and stock exhaust.

    Bike won't start after rebuild.

There is gas in the float bowls. I have brass floats set at 32 but I had them at 26 and that didn't make any difference. When I crank the motor and put my hand over the carb I can feel it sucking in as it should. Took the carbs off and there is gas in the carb and some in the rubber carb boot...

    Bike won't start after rebuild.

I switch the coil wires and it didn't change anything. Still just cranks and don't get any pop. Pulled a spark plug to make sure it is still sparking and it is. It's like the gas isn't getting from the carb to the motor but I'm not sure why.

    Bike won't start after rebuild.

Do you mean just connecting the plug wires to the other spark plugs or switching the actual wiring to the coils?
