    cafe build tips

A stock XS400 front end will be the easiest, if you want to keep the stock wheel. There are other front ends that will work, the majority of them won't just bolt up though. For the gauges, it doesn't really matter, you can get aftermarket gauges that look better and hook up to the bike easily...

What did you do with your XS today?

Just changed the oil in mine, started on the side mount license plate and 40 Ford taillight, then it started raining. I'll finish the taillight when the weather clears up, then I've gotta put a new tube in the rear tire since I picked up a nail.

    Widest tire for front wheels

I have a 100/90-18 on the front of mine, with around 1/2 inch of space between the tire and fork tube on each side. No front fender. And I have a 130/90-16 on the rear, not much room between the tire and chain guard, but it fits.

    1980 XS400 Special II fuses?

Yeah, I'm definitely wiring in a fuse box, knowing it doesn't have one. I just wasn't sure if it was missing, or if I was looking in the wrong places. Thanks for the help guys

    1980 XS400 Special II fuses?

Well, this is interesting. There's nothing under my seat. No fuses, no fuse box. I've had the seat off, battery box out, and the tank off to try to find the fuse box on this thing, I think it just doesn't have any. But everything works except the headlight. All the other lights even work.

    1980 XS400 Special II fuses?

I'm trying to figure out why my headlight isn't getting any power. The first thing I would normally check is fuses, but I can't find a single fuse on this entire bike. Had a friend look, he couldn't find any fuses either. So where are the fuses supposed to be on this bike?

    Air pods?

My XS400 is doing ok with pod filters and an open 2-1 header. Still haven't gotten around to rejetting the carbs yet, but mine didn't have the factory air boxes or anything, so what it has now is an improvement. You have to get filters without the lip inside the rubber boot though, so you don't...

18" front and 16" rear dual sport tire search

I just ordered a Duro HF904 in a 130/90-16 and a Shinko 244 in a 3.50-18 for my 80 Special II. Can't wait for them to get here.

Did my first little test ride around the yard today, she's doing ok. Still need air filters and lights before I take it on the road. I should probably re-jet the carbs too, gotta do some research on jet sizes for these bikes.

Here's a pic of it, I didn't think to take one before taking it apart.

Hooked up a good battery, and she runs great! Im excited about this bike. Now I need a gas tank, new battery, air filters, and a clutch and clutch cable, plus a headlight and taillight, and it will be ready to ride. At least I know it runs now, feel a lot better about getting it.

Well, all I've accomplished so far is I cleaned the carbs, new plugs, new fuel line, and she won't fire up. Gotta make sure I'm getting spark. Will these bikes run with no battery? Im hoping it will, I don't want to have to buy a battery, don't ever plan on using the electric start. Edit...

Hey guys, just introducing myself. I'm Kirk, and I just got a new project this morning, a 1980 XS400. I don't really know much about these bikes yet, more used to my V Star, but I'm looking forward to working on this bike. It doesn't run, but seems to have good compression when I kick it over...
