ok one more question the yellow wire coming off the alt. that ends with cap. does that mean capacitor and would be grounded to the frame ?

That's your voltage regulator. The 79-82 bikes had a solid state one the 77-78 where mechanical.
Post a pic so we can see the wire it will help.

the wire schematic or part wire ? I hooked the regulator up and still nothing.It's gotta be something I'm just not seeing.Really weird I have worked on cars all my life and wiring has not been my strong suit but I always pull through. Bikes are a different kind of breed !
