78 XS400 2E Slipping Shift Lever

Hey everyone, this is my first bike so I'm full of questions about it.
I have a problem with the shift lever, it won't stay in the correct position and keeps falling down way too low to be useful. I tried tightening the pinch bolt and moving the lever up but it still keeps slipping down. It makes it impossible and u safe to ride. Any help would be appreciated!

So the teeth are stripped on the shaft and connector? If so you'll need to replace both.

I would start with this. This worked for me. (check the compatibility table)
