Any way to test the starter and alternator on a bike that won't start?

Would I need a multimeter for this or is there any good ways to check without one if this is the root cause of a starting issue?

Starter- run 12 volts to it through very heavy wires and see if it spins.

Alternator- look in the factory manual that is attached in a pdf in the manual sticky. It has testing procedures, and yes, you will need a multimeter that reads resistance (ohms)....but I think they all do.
