XS400 Enthusiast
Well, My first XS was a 750 special, so I guess I got demoted when I got my first XS650 
Now I'm down to 1 XS400, 2 650s, and 2 1100s. The rest of my stable is Honda.
XS650 isn't exactly long distance touring bike. Actually, the 400 is smoother at higher RPM and the 650 can numb yer butt in a short time on the highway (much like a HD XL).
Inline 4s (and 3s) are smoother still and are quite happy at highway RPM.
If "graduating" to something bigger, XS650 is a halfstep.
Not that it's a bad platform, just better for shorter rides.
I ride my CB750 rigid chopper long and short distances, tow a camper/utility trailer, it all depends what you want from that next step.
Funny thing, most HD riders think my honda chop is a stepping stone to a HD and they're dead wrong.
I've had HD and like my chop a lot better!
