. . .To XSChris for his save-the-day, award winning pics from this post of the actual Yamaha stock vacuum petcock. . .http://www.xs400.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6779

It was the second picture that helped me and to see I had the diaphragm(s) wrong side around. It all makes sense now  - - -little pinholes in diaphragm line up and all.

Before tank on, tested the petcock i rebuilt with the K&L (blue package) 18-2697 rebuild kit. $36.40+ as found on Z1 site http://z1enterprises.com/Petcock-Repair-Kit-Yamaha-XS400-XS500-XS650-XS1100-1506.aspx
I paid $30 total for same K&L blue packaged kit from this seller http://www.ebay.com/itm/XS360-XS400-SR500-XS650-XS750-XS1100-PETCOCK-KIT-/190628629195?hash=item2c625a0acb&item=190628629195&pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr

It was leaking and crying in 'on' and 'res'. I thought there had to be mention of it somewhere on the forum. All I could find was reccomending aftermarket and universal and even fuel shut-off etc. (with maybe two works-for-me votes for the vacuum petcock). I started thinking that somewhere XSChris has to have a photo of the thing - not kidding! And YES! Thanks!!! I went from pissed and considering the "alternatives" to remarkably excited just reassembling and knowing it would work.
Tested perfect and with vacuum tube on, with 'on' and 'res' did a inhale toke test on the vacuum and nice stream of petrol, I wouldn't have it any other way now (sorry Hough)(and everybody).

I'm glad you got it fixed any working well. I'm a big fan of returning things to the way Yamaha made them (most of the time), so this keeps with that spirit.

 You did a fine job with cutting/notching the petcock to fit good. If I have big time problems with the setup in the future I'll go that route and do same as yours, also good!

Nice to help get a 400 working right:thumbsup: I can take a pic of just about anything with all the parts I have
