I got it in my head to change out the spark plug wires on my DOHC XS400.

I pulled the tank to find the other end of the wires . . . it looks like you have to drop the engine to get to the coils. Is that true, or am I missing something?

Thanks,

Bill

You need to drop the engine, the coils are located above the engine in the chassis. they are mounted on the chassis on the inside.
The bolts to loosen them are on the outside of the chassis underneath the fuel tank.

Greetings,

Fred

I've gotten the coils out before by supporting the engine and removing the upper engine mounts. It was a struggle, but I managed. Lowering the engine would provide more room. Having an assistant with small hands would be an asset.

Thanks Fred & Dave. Sounds like a winter project . . . . Meantime I might have solved my problem -- intermittently firing left cylinder -- by just snipping 1/4" off the spark plug end of the wire and reattaching the cap. But I won't know until I put the gas tank back on.
