Dynamic Timing?

I am wanting to check my timing dynamically with a strobe light and wonder how this is done without draining the oil. Is it possible?

the engine has to run to time it, so without any oil would mean a seized engine.

put the bike on its main stand and no much oil will come out, lean it and it will all come out!
