so i just bought a 1980 xs 400 chop job. its leaking oil real bad from between the head and left cylinder, what year engines are of the same castings?

what year motors will bolt up for a swap?

Actually a 1956 BSA Goldstar DBD34 is a direct bolt in, but you have to reverse the polarity on the electrothingamawubbers. Damn that prince of darkness Lucas!

Any and all Yamaha xs400 single cam motors will swap in...why do you ask, do you have a line on a secret stash of NOS xs400 motors?

just wondering. if i decide to swap motors. how much of a pain is it to change the gasket? does the motor need to be pulled from the frame?

it can be done with the bottom end in situ, justa bit tight getting the cam cover off

Yup, just did my headgasket for the same exact reason, not a bad job at all. Left the motor in the bike.
