Exhaust connection

My 1979 XS 400, took the exhaust system off, disconnected the mufflers from the headers...The header pipe has what looks like a copper flange or bushing of some sort squeezed on the header pipe where it connects to the muffler. Does this thing come off? I noticed the header pipe inside this thing is dented in in a few places...Thanks,Bill

need to pry it out, they stick in there like glue

Sometimes you need to cut them off (just the ring).

Mine were stuck on really bad! I ended up cutting my mufflers off, but they were rusted through anyway.

Thank you gentlemen, xschris that is what it looks like... BC the mufflers came off, but that ring,yuk I was trying to save as much of the header pipe as possible....connecting new reverse cone mufflers...Guess I'll Have to give it the chop drewpy...Bill
