Hi all,

I'm new here as I just bought a '82 XS 400 as my first bike and project. My first order of business is to fix an exhaust leak on the LHS at the engine block. I have a gasket kit which includes ring gaskets for the exhaust. I also have an Haynes manual, but it barely mentions exhaust work. The job seems fairly simple but I have some questions:

1) Is there a torque spec for the mounting nuts, and if so what is it? I gather that the gasket needs to be crushed but is that just a feel thing?

2) Should I try to crank down on the nuts to see if I get a better seal, or could that lead to problems later?

3) I have read that the orientation matters. Does that have the seam facing in, towards the engine block or the other way around?

Any info or experience that y'all could share with me would be great. Also, tips on annealing the old gasket for re-use would be great.
